So here we are, Christmas day and the last of my quick Doctor Who retrospectives. This was Peter Capaldi's first Christmas special as the Twelfth Doctor and a really excellent one at that!
It is a tough sell to combine Nick Frost as Father Christmas with a strong horror theme successfully, even for Doctor Who! But Last Christmas succeeds admirably, without losing credibility or narrative focus... Which really is an achievement.
The storyline is rather timey-wimey, and not worth dissecting here, but the shout-outs to classic horror movies as well as Christmas ones are delightful to see, the tone as wonderfully dark and wicked, and even the jolly ol' red guy is used well.
All of this combines with my favourite Doctor of the new series to make for the absolute best of the Christmas specials.
Now... With such a high bar set, can The Husbands of River Song impress? Or will it be as big a let-down as I'm dreading from the trailers? Guess we'll see in a few hours...
